Express gets it wrong - but doesn't apologise

Buried at the bottom of page 30 of today's Daily Express is the following correction:

Our article of May 14, 2011, "Drama teacher jailed for lesbian affair with pupil'" included a photograph said to be that of Caroline French, the teacher jailed for having an affair with a 13 year old girl.

The photograph was not of Ms French but of someone wholly unconnected to the case.

Is it really beyond the Express to apologise for such an error?

  1. Well, I don't suppose they know who it is to apologise to, do they? 'We apologise to whoever it is that is in the picture' doesn't really sound right, and is in fact, a bit pointless, isn't it?

  2. A friend was in a similar situation (Sun newspaper, wrong photo, paedophile allegations). He sued the rag (Max Clifford only too happy to help) and won £10k from them.

  3. @Anonymous 1 - I would think it unlikely that they have no idea who is in the picture which was mistakenly used. And even if so, I don't see why it should be beyond them to say "we apologise to the person who was wrongly identified as Caroline French".

  4. If they have no idea who she really is then A simple "We apologise to all parties we mistakenly involved in these events" would have been fine.

Has the photo been used before and will it be used again when they can't be bothered to do any research in what they pass off as news?
