'Shite like this'

When David Cameron appointed Baroness Warsi to the Cabinet - the first female Muslim to have that honour - the reaction of some people on the Sun's messageboards was loathsome:

'They should have nothing to do with running our country'. Having been born in Yorkshire, how is Britain not Warsi's country?

Newspaper website messageboards, like the interwebs in general, do attract extremist views - anyone who saw the gloating of some Mail readers over the death of an illegal immigrant would know that.

MySun also attracts such comments, but the moderators do little to remove them once the appear.

So we get this:

And this:

And this:

The last two comments were in reaction to the case of Bashir Aden, an asylum seeker from Somalia.

How has the immigration debate gone so awry that immigrants are referred to as 'shite' and 'excrement'?

The Sun's own house rules state:

Prohibited content includes, but is not limited to content that, in the opinion of Provider:

14.1 is offensive;

14.2 promotes racism, terrorism, hatred or physical harm of any kind against any group or individual or links to websites that promote the same;

How do comments such as these not fall foul of that?

  1. I notice SOME of those COMMENTS have certain WORDS CAPITALISED because it MAKES A POINT.

Can't help thinking that's actually the work of the mods. Surely this kind of work is beyond the knuckle draggers who, if anything, WOULD PROBABLY SHOUT ALL THE TIME!

  2. Strange that the story about two white supremacist terrorists who were jailed yesterday for manufacturing a deadly poison never made it to the front pages of the tabloids. Must be just an over-site on behalf of the various editors!

  3. DBC - Indeed. I'm planning a post on that very topic...

  4. If "Eat the train" (the guy on mysun who said a christian wouldn't be able to hold ofice in the middle east without losing his head.) is reading this. (and I doubt he is.) Tariq Aziz, deputy prime minister of Iraq under Saddam was a Christian. What a wally!

  5. 'If a Christian tried to get into politics in the Middle East, heads would come off!'
Obviously never heard of Lebanon, then...

  6. This just makes me want to cry. People disgust me more and more everyday

  7. Perhaps it is because I am still young and naive but it truly makes me want to cry to discover that there are such horrible, ignorant racist and uncaring people in the world. I love this website as it exposes the awful hypocrisy and lies of the media but at the same time, it does make me somewhat loose faith in humanity. But then as I say, I'm young and naive.

Mr McGuffin if there was any site on the net to analyse, Sun Online (SOL) is it. You will never see a more mixed group of nutters, lonely hearts, desperados and outright racists mixed together in one forum.

Look at the News and The Sun Pub (Banter) sections and you'll see what I mean. Grown adults playing pointless count up, count down (not Carol Vorderman kind), A-Zs, Last Post Wins...

Believe it or not, there ARE moderators active on that forum (DanielJ being the head mod), however they are more likely to kick you off for daring to have a second account than for spewing religious hatred.

  9. I think that many of the distasteful comments on the 'The Sun' forums are basically a response to some of the utter cobblers published in the paper about immigration.

What is quite interesting is that the mods are happy to allow racist comments to be posted on the forum they are very quick to block comments that challenge 'The Sun's' distorted view of the world. I have tried to post several comments pointing out the hypocrisy of 'The Sun' calling for more money for the army while paying as little taxas possible in this country. But these comments are always blocked.

  10. it's so stupid because there are real and pertinent criticisms that can be made about baroness warsi being in cabinry that have nothing to do with her religious beliefs!
i cannot believe the level of hate and vile anger that people pour onto internet message boards. igorance, nastiness, stupidity - it is horrific and the press are so complicit in this way of thinking.
have been on the receiving end of it this weekend myself but nothing as vile and sickening as what is seen here.

'I don't see why objecting to someone's religion is any worse than objecting to their political beliefs. Both are ideologies that people choose to follow. They are not comparable with race or sexuality, which people are born with and cannot change.

As a gay man, I'm alarmed when religious people get into positions of power, especially ones like Warsi who has used anti-gay comments. I shouldn't be accused of racism for voicing them.

Neither Islam or Christianity are races.'

I think that given religion is often something handed down to you via culture and parental influence (and also geographically), it is simplistic at best to describe it as a choice.

Racism may be the wrong word for it - but intolerance is intolerance is intolerance, whether of sexuality, race, or religious background.

  12. Sigh. Another day, another step towards the inevitable totalitarianism of idiocy that awaits us. Thanks, the Sun, for your continual injection of ignorance, bigotry and shrieking soundbites into British political discourse. That and your apparent inability to pay taxes in the very country that sustains you. The hateful posters to whom MacGuffin has drawn our attention are your offspring; you must be dead proud.

  13. Ah the Sun readers comments, as Ben Kenobi once said "you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy", although he obviously didn't read the Daily Mail

Mr McGuffin if you look quickly at the link you can see plenty of what I was on about. Racism, threats, it's got the lot:

This one by El.President particularly makes me cringe:

"and if you god forbid have kids with a muslim? hypocrite, dirty fishy mínge slaag, píss off and hang yourself later please, go on, you know you wanna"
